The art of managing a mix of telecommuters and in-office workers is not always easy. Hybrid teams comprised of both types of workers may encounter some unique challenges.

Yet, telecommuting is both efficient and cost effective. For a growing number of companies, tapping a virtual workforce carries significant benefits. Here are some suggestions for managing a team comprised of both on- and off-site workers:

  1. Create opportunities for interaction. Schedule a teleconference with both types of workers at least once per month. Make it lighthearted and fun. The objective is to create a sense of bonding among coworkers, especially those who don’t see each other in person every day.
  2. Be equitable. Make sure both in-office and remote workers are treated as fairly and equally as possible in terms of workload and career advancement. Address any concerns that telecommuting employees get more flexibility or are working fewer hours than in-office workers.
  3. Help remote employees feel valued. You don’t want telecommuters to feel forgotten. Make sure you’re providing a variety of feedback — positive and negative — to your remote workers as well as those who work side by side with you. Don’t reach out to telecommuters only when things go wrong.
  4. Some workers may prefer an in-office position. Telecommuting may not work for every staff member. If possible, accommodate those employees who would prefer to work in a group setting down the line.
