Time management: How to find a healthy balance

Handsome businessman checking his wrist-watch isolated on white backgroundThe world has become almost obsessed with ‘going green,’ and not without reason. However, there are some resources that are unfortunately not renewable, like time. Time is a valuable resource that must be used wisely, because once it’s gone, there’s no getting it back.

However, it can also be an easy thing to squander. Our lives get busy, and we have lots of goals to complete. It’s not just about our work life, but about balancing our home life as well.

How do we make time for everything? Simply put: We don’t. We have to find a healthy balance between work and home. That means that sometimes we will have to say ‘No’ to family, friends, or co workers.

It’s all about prioritizing. Take time to think about what your top priorities are, and make time on the calendar for those items. Schedule and plan everything, even your down time. This can help wipe away distractions.

For example: schedule time for email, Facebook and phone calls. But, when you’re working on something else, remove the distractions. Don’t take a time out for social media (unless of course that’s your job). Award yourself at the end, with that down time. If you need to, hang a “Do Not Disturb sign” outside of your office, or share the load with someone. Let go of the dangerous thoughts that whisper, “If I don’t do it myself, it won’t be done right.” Ask someone for help.

Set your to-do lists, use your phone’s calendar, a wall calendar, or Microsoft Outlook/ Lotus Notes to schedule appointments and set goals. But, if you know you’re out of time, ask someone else to chip in. Time is a valuable resource that you can’t get back once it’s gone. Make sure to use it wisely!
